Eastman Johnson was the most celebrated American genre painter of his era, lionized during the 1860s and 1870s for his sensitive paintings of country life. Less well known is a series of paintings and drawings he made early in his career of the native Ojibwe at Lake Superior. Curiously, Johnson never chose to exhibit these pictures.
